Periodontitis, also known as gum disease or periodontal disease, is a bacterial inflammation that is estimated to affect over 47% of those over 30 years of age. Most cases are caused by hard tartar formed at the gum line, and some medical conditions and tobacco use can accelerate its infection. Periodontal disease doesn’t often go reported in its early stages because there are no painful symptoms indicating something is wrong.

The beginning stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. The symptoms of gingivitis are bleeding gums that are red or inflamed and chronic bad breath. A person with gingivitis can potentially reverse the condition by improving their daily oral care routines and also seeking out regular dental cleanings.

When the gum disease symptoms are left unchecked, the infection and inflammation can spread into the gum tissue. This will cause a person to develop periodontitis. This causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating open spaces that are perfect spots for developing other bacteria. Periodontitis is also known for causing bone structure and tooth loss.

The systemic inflammation of periodontitis can overwork your immune system. Medical studies show this taxation of the immune system can lead to other health issues and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer.
